We’re celebrating Slater Fire survivors coming home!

The Slater Fire tore through the small town of Happy Camp, California in September of 2020. This August, we welcomed several families home, and that’s our favorite thing to celebrate! HCRN staff, Bill and Wendi Johnson, presented the homeowners with a few house warming gifts. A quilt from one of our partner churches, Presbyterian Church of the Master, to represent all the different pieces that come together to make a successful recovery possible. Wendi also presented a wooden cross to the homeowners, a gift that Bill makes himself.

We were happy to celebrate with the homeowners, as well as Christian Public Service members who have put in so much work to see these families return home. You can see some more photos from this dedication at the bottom of this email.

It’s a difficult journey to go from losing your home to walking through your new front door. We are so thankful to the homeowners we get to serve and be a part of their recovery. But more than that, it’s so wonderful to hear how much it means to the disaster survivors to have had our wonderful volunteers in their lives.

One of the homeowners said, “Thank you so much Wendi, [these gifts are] such a sweet surprise! We cannot wait to get settled in and enjoy our new home! It truly took a village to get to this point, and we are so thankful for the many blessings we have in our lives.”
