Happy Camp needs you!

Our project in Happy Camp is ready for our first rebuilds. Our staff have submitted for three permits and should receive approval soon. It’s going to be a challenging first year of construction, but challenges are what we have become accustomed to, and have become adept at overcoming! We can move forward because of volunteers and donors like you! Thank you for following this project and for the support you have sent our way and to the community of Happy Camp that suffered the Slater Fire of 2020.

Below, we’ve uploaded an infographic on the Slater Fire and its impact.

While we wait for permit approvals, our staff have continued renovating a space for volunteer housing. Check out some of the photos of Bill and Tra installing drywall, and a video of the final sheet being placed! HCRN couldn’t move forward on any projects without our fantastic staff. Thank you to Bill, Tra, Kristan, Wendi and Bella!

There are many factors as to why Happy Camp especially will need teams of volunteers this year. HCRN’s biggest concern is with access to sub-contracts that have been important for our work in California. We want to have 2-3 homes being constructed at once and that means we need volunteers!

Take a look at your schedule, talk with your church and social clubs about what a service trip to Happy Camp might look like. We’re looking for teams of 8-16 who want to see people get back home. Construction skills are helpful, but no matter who you are or what you think you’re capable of, you can make a difference here. There’s a lot of work that needs to get done. Are you up for that challenge?

The Slater Fire was a disaster lost amongst disasters. Between the pandemic and much larger fires that year taking attention, the relatively small disaster of 200+ homes just couldn’t get going. Cleanup efforts were severely delayed, and funding had been a question for rebuilding. What was never in question is that this recovery is possible and that HCRN wants to be part of that recovery.

Volunteers are the life blood of what makes our rebuilding program possible. Without volunteers, we can’t operate as efficiently, nor at a price our homeowners can afford. You are what makes these rebuilds work. You are the light in our Beacon of Hope. Will you continue to partner with us as we Rebuild Homes and Restore Lives?
