Imagine if an earthquake shook your community, damaging homes and infrastructure. You’ve met the immediate needs of residents, but now you need a plan for repairing the damage and seeing a full disaster recovery. In January, Humboldt County, California found themselves in this predicament. HCRN stepped in to mentor local leaders, providing guidance and input earned through over two decades of experience in Disaster Recovery work.

The beginning of Disaster Recovery and the end of Immediate Response begins with a community deciding it needs a longer term plan for repairs to residential properties and infrastructure. HCRN assists in what we call “Standing Up” a Long-Term Recovery Group. These groups are made up of members in local government, non-profits, local businesses and foundations. The purpose of these groups is right there in the name: focusing on Long-Term Recovery needs for residents.

After a group has been stood up, HCRN continues to support these organizations through mentorship. In the early days of recovery, some of these groups will meet every day or every other day. As progress is made, these meetings become weekly or monthly. Most importantly, HCRN stays on with these groups for the length of their existence, sometimes as long as 5 to 7 years!

Disaster Recovery is a Marathon, not a Sprint. Along the path, runners (disaster survivors) need support and encouragement. Their Long-Term Recovery group is an important source of that support and encouragement, and HCRN is so proud to guide these local groups through the hardest time in their communities.

We provide this mentorship and guidance completely free of charge. HCRN believes this work is to important to be kept behind a paywall, and it’s thanks to our generous donors we are able to do this work.
