Painting goes a long way towards making a house into a home. From the first coat of primer to the last coat of a beautiful forest green, each stroke means a family is that much closer to coming home. For volunteers from the Department of Angels (a component fund from the California Community Foundation), they worked on what will be one of the final components in getting the Campbells back to their home in Altadena, California.

On one of the hottest days in October, a group of seven volunteers brought breakfast tacos and good vibes to the Campbell home. One of their fellows just happens to be the granddaughter of Mr. Campbell, and the whole crew was thrilled to be working towards her grandfather returning home. They would spend the next few hours working on painting baseboards and trim, pieces that will be part of the finish work on this home.

Mr. Campbell’s granddaughter wasn’t the only impacted person volunteering that morning. At least two other members just happen to be neighbors to Mr. Campbell, and they’ve been rebuilding or repairing their homes. One survivor-turned-volunteer said, “I think every opportunity a survivor gets to help someone else come home is a meaningful opportunity.” This volunteer had lost his home and has been going through the whole process of rebuilding, and is looking forward to celebrating, not only his own return, but those of his whole town.

No matter how small the opportunity, it’s important to do what we can to see disaster survivors make a meaningful recovery. From painting baseboards to laying flooring, even framing a home, we have work that volunteers can do in Altadena for Eaton Fire survivors. We have so much work to do, and we can’t accomplish any of it without volunteers like our friends from the Department of Angels.

Will you bring the next family home?
