We are so proud of all the work being accomplished in San Diego! In January of 2024, a major flood damaged thousands of homes and left at least 1,200 households unable to return. Some homes experienced 8 feet of water and lost many of their possessions. HCRN and our partner Community Recovery Team have been working to help those most impacted get back home.
To help us along the way, we’ve been lucky to have a few teams stay at our dorm and get things done. Our amazing AmeriCorps NCCC team, Red 8, have been with us since mid-January and have been learning all sorts of skills, including drywall and flooring. These group of young people are just finishing up their half-round stay with us and will be on their way back to AmeriCorps headquarters next week. We’re so proud of the way they’ve grown as individuals and as a team while staying with us, and wish them well on their next project!
The next team we want to highlight is the group of Handymen who cam from all over the US to work on a home over a weekend. This team was organized by a friend of HCRN, Allen Lee, and his vision was to bring as many handymen together to do some good and grow together as people and handymen. Check out the short video he made about their week:
Another aspect we’d like to highlight is how Red 8 assisted another partner, UMCOR, in building sifters for LA County Wildfire survivors to look for any personal possessions that may have survived the fires. Check out some of their work building these simple but important devices.
