California is experiencing catastrophic levels of rain and snow. Across the state of California, people have been left without power, in the path of rivers overflowing and in danger from mudslides and incredible levels of snow in the mountains.

This weather has been caused by two major phenomena: atmospheric rivers and a bomb cyclone. Atmospheric rivers are essentially highly concentrated rain clouds being pushed from either side into a narrow corridor. These atmospheric river systems are strengthened by a bomb cyclone in the Pacific Ocean. A significant drop in pressure in a very short period of time creates this bomb effect on weather patterns.

While most of California has been under drought conditions, it is unclear exactly how much this amount of precipitation will affect the summer and fall months when fire danger is at its highest.

These rains are dangerous and the flooding will be a concern if the storms continue to dump moisture across the state. HCRN will be working with the state and local agencies to best serve where we can.
