California is experiencing a heat dome this week. With temperatures expected to exceed 100°F, the whole state is on high alert. Not only will the temperatures be dangerous for people unable remain indoors with air conditioning, but the blazing temperatures will continue to dry out fast fuels. These fast fuels can be easily ignited and lead to larger fires.

Don’t Panic, Prepare!

The best way to be ready for the heat is to prepare for what’s to come. Follow our tips below to keep yourself and others as safe as possible.

The next think you can do is sign up for PG&E alerts the PG&E website here. These alerts will inform you if you will be part of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). A PSPS is a tool used power companies to limit the ability of dangerous fires to even begin. When conditions such has high temperatures, high winds and other criteria are met for a given area, a PSPS will be announced. Don’t get surprised!

Part of preparing for a PSPS means knowing what your medical needs will be during these events. Do you have medication that must be refrigerated? You can qualify for backup power supplies, like a generator or batteries, from your county. Don’t have medical necessity, but want to keep your fridge and freezer from spoiling food? If you can afford to invest in a small generator, now is the time to do so and keep it fueled. Remember, any generator that runs on gasoline or propane MUST be operated outdoors and away from your home. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.
