Renovations continue in Happy Camp, as HCRN prepares to host regular volunteer teams to assist in rebuilding from the Slater Fire of 2020. This week, we’re going to give you a virtual tour of our campus. We’ve partnered with the Happy Camp Assemblies of God Church to serve the community of Happy Camp, and provide a comfortable space that volunteers will be happy to call home for a week at a time.
First, an introduction to our staff:
If you’ve spent time at our Middletown project, you most likely remember these faces! Bill Johnson is our construction manager for Happy Camp and has run rebuilding projects in Middletown and Shasta. His daughter and Son-In-Law, Kristan and Tra, were our dorm hosts in Middletown. They have taken on a few extra roles in Happy Camp as they renovate and prepare for volunteers. Wendi has been our photographer to make sure you get to see as much of their progress as possible, and will be assisting Kristan with volunteer needs. Pastor Jim Uhey became the leader of the Happy Camp Assembly of God in 2021. He also continues his work with disaster recovery through The Phoenix Project. He has been a wonderful partner as we renovate this property to best serve volunteers and the community.
Next, let’s take a look at the exterior campus:
This church was incredibly fortunate to survive the Slater Fire, as most surrounding structures were lost. We are so thankful to partner with the Assemblies of God Church and Pastor Jim Uhey to be able have safe and healthy housing for our volunteers who will be our best asset in rebuilding in Happy Camp. You’ll notice that large metal building standing next to the church. It is this building that will house our volunteers once renovations are completed. This campus was a blessing and will continue to be a place of restoration for fire survivors in Happy Camp.
Lastly, let’s take a look inside the completed renovations of this campus.
Thank you to our friends at UMCOR for helping kick off these renovations, and a huge thank you to our staff for completing this update. The new kitchen is laid out to be similar to a commercial kitchen, with new stoves, microwaves and industrial refrigerator. New flooring makes it easier to clean and maintain during the length of our project here in Happy Camp. Our staff are continuing to renovate our future volunteer housing in the metal building pictured above. We can’t wait to show you the completion of that renovation!
Your support in Lake, Mendocino, Shasta, Sonoma and Butte has enabled us to feel confident in undertaking the recovery of Happy Camp. Each project will have it’s unique challenges, but you have made it possible to serve those most in need. Thank you! For more updates, visit our facebook page.
