HCRN is rebuilding at a pace we have never before reached in California, and for that we celebrate! Thank you for being an important part of the work HCRN does in Rebuilding Homes and Restoring Lives. You’re the ones who help share our story and connect us with people who need help, and people who are capable of providing help. Today we’re going to give a brief update on our rebuilding projects in Northern California.

HCRN has established two rebuilding projects currently operating in Butte and Siskiyou counties. Our staff have been hard at work laying the groundwork for these projects to be successful and for the communities affected by wildfire to see meaningful recovery. There is so much that goes in to preparing for volunteers to rebuild, and ensuring the communities we serve are ready for that work to begin.

Happy Camp suffered the Slater Fire in September of 2020 and, due to COVID, had a greater difficulty in getting the early stages of recovery moving. HCRN became a partner in their rebuilding, earlier this year. Check out the graphic below for a little more information about the Slater Fire.

Happy Camp is a community that was ready and willing to put in the hard work to see their members returned home and taken care of properly. The Karuk Tribe purchased about 100 RV campers to house those whose homes were lost. It was a major step in providing a clear and conscious decision to protect the community and bring it back together.

Our staff, and some hearty volunteers, have been hard at work in Happy Camp renovating the Assembly of God Church, which will become our volunteer housing. Since the beginning of July, we have been fixing up the kitchen, the former parsonage and preparing a large metal building for teams of volunteers who will serve for a week at a time in rebuilding homes. There have been hurdles and complications to this process, but God has consistently given us a path forward and the opportunity to strengthen community trust in HCRN and our dedication to seeing Happy Camp restored.

Paradise is approaching the three year anniversary of the Camp Fire. We’ve written quite a bit about how this unprecedented and deadly fire has impacted survivors and the town itself, but as we come closer to this date, it’s important to highlight the progress the town has seen.

Currently, HCRN has 7 homes under construction, and another 15 homes in our queue. We expect this number to grow rapidly in 2022 and for our work docket to be quite full for the next 5 years. Among the homes we’ve worked on, our first was completed last month and you can watch the full home dedication here. With so many others still waiting for their construction to even begin, it’s important to celebrate each and every homeowner who can make it back to their property.

Thank you to our volunteers who have served with us this summer! You’ve allowed us to push forward on so many homes in Paradise, and will continue being a blessing to this community. While teams have become smaller, your spirit and joy in serving others brings hope to those whose homes you’re rebuilding. Thank you, also, to our partner organizations All Hands And Hearts and Christian Public Service for bringing such capable individuals to serve fire survivors.

We’re proud to be booked through the end of this year, and have begun booking volunteer teams for Spring of 2022. If you or someone you know is interested in serving in Happy Camp or Paradise, email Travis Cox at [email protected].

If you cannot volunteer your labor, but still want to support our work, we invite you to donate here and to follow along with our facebook page.
