Beware of scams that are affecting flood victims
Written by Valerie Cox

FEMA officials say they are aware of three possible scams that are affecting Hoosiers.  Please be an alert for the following suspicious activity.

1.  Individuals are going door to door to collect donations wearing FEMA shirts.  FEMA never collects donations.  FEMA representatives do canvass neighborhoods collecting information for damage assessments, not money.

2.  Individuals posing as FEMA agents are calling homeowners and asking for personal business information to make deposits into their accounts.  FEMA representatives will not call homeowners to ask personal information.  When a homeowner calls an officials FEMA number or meets with them at a Disaster Recovery Center, the homeowner will need to provide personal information at that time.

3.  Contractors are going door to door to offer their services.  Do not let anyone inside your home without confirming that they are working for a legitimate company!

Be cautious with your personal information and your property!

Flooded residents still seeking assistance

The number of Hoosiers needing assistance following the record flooding this year continues to rise.  Nearly 25,000 homeowners have now applied for FEMA assistance.  Many of these homeowners are not covered by flood insurance and will need help from volunteer agencies to rebuild or repair their homes.

Flood victims are reminded that photos are one of the best ways to document the damage to your home and property and it is important to take pictures prior to disposing of damaged property.

Disaster Recovery Centers are open in 11 cities around the state, but all centers will be closed on Friday, July 4 to observe the holiday.
