“Operation Pick up Sticks” Big Success
The groups dispersed into teams of about 10-15 and out to homes that requested assistance with cleaning up fallen trees and limbs. The work was very hard, but rewarding. The limbs in many cases were so heavy from the ice storm that, when they broke and fell off, they had impelled themselves into the ground 4-6 inches. "Keeping in mind that the ground was frozen at the time, imagine the amount of force it took to drive a blunt [baseball bat] sized piece of wood into the ground. We're struggling to pull them out now even with the ground soft and muddy." said Randy, a Volunteer at Saturday's event. Homeowners were very pleased with the speed at which these teams cleaned up. The teams completed a total of 50 homes by 3pm that day! "Thank you to all of you who worked so hard to make this event such a success. I want to especially acknowledge the awesome job that Jessica Parks did in providing her leadership for this event. To Bill, Pastor James, John, Henry, Larry, Mike and Mike, Major Rick, Major Forney, Jody, Randy, Lonnie, Allen, all of the bus drivers and everyone else who gave unselfishly to help your neighbors, Thank you all.
The volunteers had a great experience, and no one got even as much as a scratch.
